Synopsis
Tom Hansen and Summer Finn meet each other in an empty elevator at their workplace, where Summer tells Tom that she “loves The Smiths” after hearing a song from his earbuds. Tom, thinking he had just found the love of his life, immediately develops romantic feelings towards Summer. One evening during a karaoke office party, Tom and Summer sat down at a table with their friends, talking about what they thought about love. Tom had always believed in fate and true love, convinced that he would only feel happy and complete with his special person. Summer, on the other hand, thought that love was a hoax, describing it as some type of fantasy—making it clear that she was not interested in engaging in a serious relationship.
But despite Summer’s evident indifference about pursuing romance, Tom continued to believe that he could change her mind, and that Summer was truly his special one. As the bond between them grows, Tom continues to live in a state of delusion and idealization, while Summer recognizes that the difference in their beliefs about relationships and love do not align in the slightest. After being dumped by the girl who he believed to be his soulmate, Tom reflects upon their entire 500 day long relationship, pondering where things went wrong.
