Finding Yourself

Finding Yourself

Simran Patel

In times of crisis, chaos descends on us like dark clouds, slowly inching its way across a blue sky. A whirlwind of emotions persists while a fog of helplessness ensues—the perfect storm of solitude. As events spiral out of control, we yearn stability. With our loved ones out of grasp, we crave personal gratification. I, too, happily saw this as an opportunity to locate some form of clarity in the present haziness of reality. Along with the rest of my youth, I resolved to find myself amid the turmoil of isolation.

However, as I later came to realize, there is no such thing as finding yourself, but rather, creating yourself. I always assumed my ultimate goal was to discover my definite purpose in the grand scheme of life. Now, I realize an essential truth: I can only ever do the next right thing. I am an ever-evolving human, continuously adapting to life’s surprises. I will never stop growing; I will never stop learning. To expect to uncover the meaning of my existence is a virtually impossible feat in a world of constant motion. Besides, what fun would life be if we knew who we were, the exact next step to take, and the consequences of our actions? Live in the unknown. Create a home in the uncertainties. The storm will eventually pass, shining light on the next stage of your life.
