New Jersey Gubernatorial Election, what is it?

Jason Colon

Update Below:
The New Jersey Gubernatorial Election is coming in a little under a month. Meaning, New Jersey will elect a new governor. Gubernatorial is defined as “relating to a state governor or the office of the governor” All 50 states have a gubernatorial election. However, not all states have their election in the same year. For example, the 2021 gubernatorial elections are only taking place in New Jersey and Virginia. Whereas, 36 states are having their elections in 2022. New Jersey’s last gubernatorial took place in 2017. In that 2017 election there was a voter turnout of 2.1 million people, in the 2013 election there was a voter turnout of 2 million people. Both of these elections had lower voter turnouts compared to the 2009 election, which had a turnout of 2.4 million people. New Jersey, in recent years, has been a prominently democratic state. If anything, it has gotten more blue. In 2017, 13 out of 21 counties were blue, while in 2020, 14 were. Dislike for New Jersey’s incumbent governor Phil Murphy, has been on the rise. Could that dislike really change New Jersey’s blue history? Or will the state, once again elect a Democrat? Voting for the 2021 election is set to take place Tuesday, November 2nd. The candidates are Governor Phil Murphy and Jack Ciattarelli. A debate between both candidates was recently held. During the debate there were both pros and cons for each, one of the main cons for Ciattarelli was that he has no endorsements from law enforcement, while Murphy does. Yes, this is true, Murphy does have two endorsements from police unions. Whereas, Jack does not. On top of that, Murphy pointed out that 11 years ago in Jack’s time as a Somerset County Freeholder (someone on the board of county commissioners) he “supported actions that led to elimination of 10 jobs in the county sheriff’s office.” However, Murphy’s claim lacked context so you can perceive it as you may. On the pandemic, recently Murphy has stated that on top of education staff, bus drivers will soon require the vaccine. His Executive Order requires all teachers and now bus drivers to be fully vaccinated by October 18th, 2021, or “face regular testing.” Murphy sent out the official reminder from his twitter on October 6th, 2021 to make sure everyone knew about his new rule. On the other hand, Ciattarelli, in an interview with NJ 101.5, said that he is against mask and vaccine mandates. He also said he was against having a sales tax on masks. I encourage you to learn more about the candidates, as there is so much more to go over. Cites used can be found below.
