On October 7th, a nationally recognized terrorist organization, Hamas, invaded Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing over 1100 civilians and taking over 200 more hostage. Since then, Israel has carried out punishing blows to the Gaza Strip, in an attempt to “flatten it.” The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have made it abundantly clear that their goal is to wipe out Hamas, and nothing will stop them.
Since October 7th, 2023, protests have raged across the United States and other nations in support of Palestine. This comes as the Gaza Strip faces a severe humanitarian crisis as a result of Israel’s blockade and invasion. In addition, over 35,000 Palestinians (most of which are civilians) have been killed by Israeli airstrikes and operations.
Specifically, many protestors chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” This is purporting an “illegal occupation” of proper Israel, and suggesting that Israel’s land belongs to Palestine.
Additionally, many Palestinian advocates are boycotting brands that “support Israel.” These brands include Addidas, Starbucks, McDonalds, and others.
The implication that Palestine supporters are making is that Israel is committing genocide, or ethnic cleansing of the strip. They say Israel’s response to the October 7th attacks was completely disproportionate and unnecessary. Additionally, they claim that Israel has violated the Geneva Conventions and is committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
