New York City, especially in the winter time, is the most surreal experience. Everything is so magical. The feeling is like stepping into a winter wonderland with bright colored festive lights and seeing the Rockefeller tree, lit up in its glory. The crisp winter air and the sounds of people ice skating at the Rockefeller Center Rink. I get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it. However, the process of planning a trip to New York City can definitely be overwhelming, speaking from personal experience. My family and I didn’t really have an itinerary the last time we went. Nonetheless, I am so grateful that I was able to see New York City in the winter time. It was truly extraordinary. After doing more research on the best things to do in New York City in the winter, I was able to craft the perfect itinerary for anyone who is overwhelmed with all of the sights to see in the city, or is just looking for ideas. If that sounds like you, look no further. Here are the must-see sights of New York City in winter.
To begin, I would absolutely encourage you to go see the Rockefeller Center. It definitely is touristy, but for good reason. The Rockefeller Tree is unlike any other Christmas tree. Typically around at least 75 feet tall, the tree is stunningly large. While the tree is the main attraction, there are so many interesting and worthwhile sites to see at the Rockefeller Center. For instance, you can go shopping right there at the center. Stores like Tiffany & Co and Swarovski that may peak some people’s interests are located there. If you are not that interested in shopping, the Rockefeller Center has more to offer. For those who are interested in art, this next sight is the perfect place for you. Featured works such as “News” by Isamu Noguchi and “Prometheus” by Paul Manship are proudly displayed at the Rockefeller Center. These art pieces are absolutely stunning and are a must see at the Rockefeller Center, especially if you have an eye for artistic works. The most popular activity, besides seeing the tree itself, would be to go ice skating directly under the Rockefeller Tree. The rink is very big and has the most picturesque view of the tree. Overall, the Rockefeller Center is absolutely worth your time and I encourage you to see these sights.
The next sight that is certainly worth your time is Bryant Park. There are a plethora of new things to experience. Bryant Park is widely renowned for its winter village’s cozy aesthetic during the winter; with small shops selling the most tasty food and the dim lighting capturing the cheerful Christmas atmosphere. I know firsthand that the shop that is worth visiting the most is Crepe Cafe. When I went to this cafe a year ago, it was the most delicious food I have ever tasted. I got a crepe filled with strawberries, bananas, and nutella. It was heavenly; with the rich chocolate flavor blending with the sweet taste of the strawberries and bananas. There are so many other shops to choose from as well. In fact, many shops in the Bryant Park Winter Village have gone viral on TikTok or other platforms. A shop called Strawberro sells delicious strawberries covered in the famous Dubai chocolate. Another shop named Bel Fries has gone viral for their flavorful and delicious truffle fries. Lastly, a place called Gnocchi on 9th, that is known for their delicious and one-of-a-kind Gnocchi, opened a shop in the winter village. Not only is there food, but there is also a beautiful ice skating rink just like The Rockefeller Center that spans out all across Bryant Park. The frigid winter air clashing with the thrill of ice skating in the world’s most exciting city is simply the most unforgettable experience. Clearly, the Bryant Park Winter Village is perfect for the holiday season and has something for everyone.
Last but not least, a spectacle in New York City that absolutely captures every aspect of festivities during the holiday season is none other than Radio City. There is an abundance of things to do and sights to see. For those interested in the graceful and expressive art of dancing, check out The Rockettes at the Radio City Music Hall. The Christmas Spectacular starring The Rockettes is scheduled to run from November 8, 2024 through January 5, 2025, filled with their famous high-kicking routines, their unity within the dances, and their glamorous outfits as they put their heart and soul into their performances. Across from Radio City Music Hall lie the iconic, vibrant 25 feet tall red Christmas ornaments. They are beautifully designed and are famous for bringing holiday cheer to New York City in the holiday season. In essence, Radio City has so much to offer, and I absolutely encourage you to visit it to embrace the festive season.
Overall, there is so much to do this holiday season in the most inspiring and festive city. New York City has so much to offer, and there will always be something for everyone. Some other great places that I haven’t mentioned that are certainly worth visiting are the world-renowned Central Park, the bustling streets of Times Square, and the most festive place to go shopping; 5th Avenue. Whether you enjoy ice skating at The Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park ice rinks, strolling through the picturesque and cozy Bryant Park Winter Village, or seeing The Rockettes showcasing their pure talent through their expressive and enthralling performances this holiday season, I can guarantee that you will absolutely love the experience of visiting New York City during the winter season. There is no better place to savor the exciting holiday season other than New York City.
