Researchers from the University of Florida documented the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a North American Bottlenose Dolphin. The dolphin was later found distressed and then died soon after in Florida. A tissue sample from the dolphin revealed the presence of HPAI A (H5N1) virus or bird flu. Scientists are still investigating the origin of the infection and how it was possible. These scientists are investigating by sequencing local birds’ genomes and comparing them to the virus found within the dolphin. However, these scientists at the University of Florida couldn’t pinpoint the exact source. Furthermore, this issue shows how further research and studies need to be done to see how this virus and its virus family jump between species.
