New medicine is constantly developed, from developing drugs to new cells that can cure otherwise thought incurable diseases affecting millions of families. But due to biomedical engineers working in their respective fields, they can help make new methods of helping people from biomedical imaging devices to biomaterial engineering. Biomedical engineers have many responsibilities including tissue engineering, which is a practice that can help develop new methods of medicine to cure diseases. The entire goal of tissue engineering as a whole is to repair, maintain, or improve damaged tissues, either through prosthetics or a more organic way like tampering with cells. The field of tissue engineering continues to evolve especially through nontherapeutic applications using tissues as biosensors, that allow them to detect diseases or injured organs accurately. Currently, tissue engineering as a whole has very little patient interaction, of course, there are some operations conducted like skin grafts or supplemental bladders. While other more complex organs have been made in a laboratory, they’re far from ever seeing patient interaction as of now. However, that doesn’t mean they serve no purpose, these artificial organs are extremely helpful in research and drug development. To conclude, medicine specifically tissue engineering is an experimental field that improves current methods of medicine and provides a new way to approach curing diseases.
